Winter is a natural time for introspection, stillness and deeper connection with self - perfectly aligned with the inner workings of Ashtanga.
As the world quietens and nature draws inwards, so too can we. We need this time of year to slow down, to restore our energy, to rest, in order to balance the outwardly focused energy and productivity of the warmer months. So how can we balance this need with a yoga practice that, on the outside, is strong and dynamic, that follows strict rules and requires a lot of energy? How can we sustain our practice throughout the winter months without exhausting ourselves? Without becoming depleted, disillusioned and uninspired?
Join me for a grounding Ashtanga workshop designed to support your transition into winter - a season of slowing down, stillness, reflection and inner nourishment.
The morning session will start with stillness and breathwork before moving into a hybrid led / Mysore style self practice class. (I will talk through the sun salutations and standing postures before moving into guided self practice - lots of support will be given to those who don't know the sequence and it is fine to bring along a practice sheet).
The focus of the morning practice will be on the internal experience as well as softening in practice. Work to the level that feels right for you on this day whether that is to do less or even more - this is your practice! There will be space for some reflection after the session.
The afternoon will comprise of:
Discussion
Looking at the pros and cons of the 'system' of Ashtanga yoga - where do you stand on this?
How to make this a practice that is sustainable throughout not only the seasons of the year but the seasons of our lives - looking at the many cycles.
Practice
The focus of the afternoon asana session will be how to soften in practice, both externally and internally. We will look at some of the more introspective postures in detail. Our focus will be on the internal experience rather than the outward form.
